RMCAD is elated to continue its 10 year anniversary of the VASD program with Liz Montague. Liz Montague is a cartoonist and illustrator whose work focuses on the intersection of self and social awareness.
A majority of Montague’s works build off of the importance of representation, accessible information, and drawing what you feel. Her pieces explore the richness and messiness of our interior selves, honest and embarrassing monologues, and running up against external forces and structures. The artist’s work is built on a foundation of the often-overlooked forms of revolution like self-care, empathy, optimism, and humor. She notes a few major influences in the creation of her work such as Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1997), the HBO television series Insecure, and the album Detroit 2 by Big Sean.
Liz began contributing to The New Yorker in 2019, after graduating from the University of Richmond in 2018. She has been featured in The Washington Post, ABC News, and The Today Show among many other media outlets. Liz is the creator of the popular Liz at Large cartoon series. The cartoons she draws grow from her own experiences, thoughts, and perceptions.
Liz has been a pioneer for Black women in her industry, as she was one of 18 Black and BIPOC artists selected by the USTA to create an art installation transforming the front-row seats in Arthur Ashe Stadium for the 2020 US Open. In September 2020, Google Doodle published illustrations by Liz, celebrating cartoonist and activist Jackie Ormes. She also partnered with the Joe Biden For President Campaign to storyboard and illustrate the Your Vote Matters. Additionally, she’s created a series of downloadable coloring pages from her Liz at Large cartoon in Washington City Paper available here.
