Artist Statement
In this project, I explore the topic of family and what it’s like to revisit ideas of “home” and how that can change with age. The A-frame house built is a close replica of my childhood home and features photos of my family (myself included). At first glance, these photographs may seem joyful and sweet captures, but they aren’t perfect transfers- some areas are distorted and smudged. Maybe things weren’t as ideal as I remembered. In furthering this concept, I included the idea of “rose-tinted glasses” and how, in childhood, many things are seen in a positive but unrealistic light. Additionally, that makes it easy to assume things are always black and white, leaving no possibility for grey areas. Thus this is why all the photos have no color. At face value, it is very easy to get a misconception about the piece. The deeper you look within the house, the more off-put things may become. Were things always this way? Were you just never able to recognize them? Things may have just not been what they seemed. The slideshow playing in the background is my reaction to this realization as an adult, out of home and looking in with a new perspective. Houses, building houses, and the smell of wood have been ingrained in me since I was a child. My dad’s family are all carpenters and had a building company, “Medina Builders”, while I was growing up. Knowing this, I started this project with the idea of a wooden house with family photos, and the concept developed from there.
