This workshop will provide a window into the creative process of a music producer working to compose new music. We’ll start from scratch, using only the equipment and software that’s made available to RMCAD MP students. DAW-based production techniques will be introduced (including MIDI sequencing, synthesis, digital audio recording, and effects processing) and applied as creative tools— exploring the gamut of decisions producers think about and make. We’ll shift quickly between creative modes of thought: musical elements always being considered in relation to production technologies, and vice versa. Throughout the workshop, prospective RMCAD students will be able to ask questions, provide feedback, and contribute to the creative decisions involved in producing. After a 45 minute creative working session, we’ll take stock of the music we’ve produced and provide a space for asking broader questions about being a producer and RMCAD’s BFA degree program.
