Join the RMCAD community in the Rotunda Gallery for El Bohío del Bohiti, an exhibition by Fine Arts student Denise “The Vamp DeVille” Zubizarreta.
El Bohío del Bohiti is an exploration through reclamation, with the Taínos (indigenous to the Caribbean) as the main focus. Figures from Caribbean history take the forefront as colonialist Spanish baroque ornamentation is reversed to exalt figures in history who have been hidden from view.
Symbolic religious connections to the islands are examined in an immersive installation that engulfs the viewer with vivid visuals, sounds and scents. This is not an exaltation of Spanish colonization but an examination of the possibilities within an imaginative peaceful convergence of culture.
What could our world look like? What figures would be exalted? Would we still look at this history through white-washed eyes? What could have been made from the gold that remained with us? Would our flags be the same? Would we be a more unified people?
