Alumni Spotlight: Rebecca Kaufman

Rebecca Kaufman is a 2002 graduate of the Interior Design program at RMCAD. Since graduating, she has launched her own custom design firm, rebaL design, and has been recognized for her work in publications such as Elite Traveler and Lifestyle magazine.

Kaufman is currently working on two large custom mountain homes on a guest ranch called the C Lazy U Ranch in Granby, CO. She is also working on a few smaller residential and commercial projects in Denver. “The wide range of how my days play out is what keeps me loving what I do. Routines become stale and design is about creativity and the new and unknown!” she explained.

The successful designer has taken a special interest in sustainable design. Her interest was sparked during her college years. “RMCAD had a strong emphasis in Green Design and I (wanted) to learn as much as I could. I was given the opportunity to help write the criteria for LEED certification with Associates III. This experience and my passion for Green Design has grown with time, and has connected me with some amazingly talented individuals.”

Kaufman touted the role of internships and business courses in her success and recalled her time at Associates III as a game-changing experience. “Since I wanted to start my own company one day, being offered a business background would have been invaluable… (Real-world) trial and error can be a much more painful and expensive process.”

RMCAD initially appealed to the graduate for its location and accreditation. “RMCAD had a great reputation, good signs of growth, and the location was ideal for my desired lifestyle,” she said. Kaufman fondly remembers the student art shows and studying with a class of immensely talented artists.

In looking forward, Kaufman hopes to become more involved with charities and design education. She is currently working towards receiving the “Mountain Living Home of the Year” award for a project she will complete this summer.
